Project Description
In Uganda, a staggering 64% to 70% of working age youth are facing unemployment or underemployment. This is because many children either drop out of school or complete their education without any skills which leaves them ill-prepared to create opportunities for themselves.
To break this cycle, Kisoboka Africa started The young savers project that focuses on supporting children in rural schools in Lwengo to develop life skills necessary to shape their futures. Through school based clubs, we empower school-going children with essential financial literacy, leadership and entrepreneurship skills. We aim at fostering, creativity, confidence and responsibility among these children.
Through the Young Savings Project, we organise children in rural primary schools into clubs, consisting of 60 to 90 children. We teach practical entrepreneurial skills to these children and support them financially to start school-based enterprises that they come with. These enterprises are aimed at helping them learn entrepreneurship practically but also generate for them incomes they can use to save, but also buy scholastic materials where parents can’t provide . Children are also encouraged to start individual projects at their homes to continue generating incomes for their needs
This hands-on approach not only builds a strong entrepreneurship culture from a young age but also improves school retention, self-discipline, and decision-making thus laying a foundation for lifelong learning
Through this work, we are raising a generation of self-driven, financially-savvy, and socially-aware young people—capable of transforming their lives and communities.
Project History
Kisoboka Africa has previously implemented the project in 18 primary schools in Lwengo district, rural Uganda reaching out to over 1600 children. Through setting up clubs, children have been equipped with financial literacy skills, entreprenrship and leadership skills.
At Kisoboka Africa, we believe that children are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they are changemakers today. Yet many children in underserved communities face daily challenges that limit their ability to stay in school, access scholastic materials, and develop the life skills necessary to shape their own futures.
We have empowered children to save, lead, and grow through school-based savings clubs that nurture financial discipline, entrepreneurship, and social-emotional skills. By equipping them with financial literacy, leadership opportunities, and practical income-generating projects, we help children develop a savings culture, set goals, and make informed decisions.
As a result children have been able to save more than $10,000 on their own over time, and have used the money to buy school essentials such as school uniforms. Many have also started small income generating activities such as rearing goats, pigs, pancake making among others heling them generate more incomes. For example, Olivia, aged 12, managed to save $2.5 in 2024, her parents couldn’t afford buying her a school unform. She asked her cousin to contribute for her and bought a school uniform. To many this is small, but for Olivia, it meant the world because it allowed her buy a school uniform which has increased her confidence and interest in education because she feels comfortable at school. This is one of many stories of hope and change that show that with the right support, we can empower a future generation with financial literacy which can transform lives.
Project Impact
Since 2023, the Young Savers Club (YSC) program has created a wave of transformation across Lwengo district, reaching 18 rural schools and directly impacting the lives of over 1,800 students—more than half of which are girls. In just two years, rural school-going children under the program have collectively saved over $8,000. This figure is more than just a number, it reflects the power of consistent saving, wise financial decision-making, and goal setting by children, many of whom come from resource-limited communities.
Over 108 children, who serve as club leaders, have been equipped with practical leadership skills. These children are now taking on leadership roles not just within the clubs but in the wider school community, with many acting as class monitors, prefects, and peer mentors. Their confidence, communication, and decision-making skills have grown significantly.
Children in these clubs have received structured training in financial literacy and entrepreneurship. The impact is evident: students now reason through financial choices, set realistic goals, and make informed decisions. Over 1,000 children run home-based income generating activities including goat rearing, craft making, and poultry among others. Important still, there is increased interest in education by club members because they know at school they learn more than class work, they are acquiring lifelong skills to help them survive in this competitive world.
Project Team Credentials
Kisoboka Africa is driven by a passionate and experienced team with deep expertise in financial literacy, business coaching, and child-centered education programming—particularly in underserved rural communities. Our project team brings together both professional qualifications and lived experience, making them uniquely equipped to design and deliver impactful interventions for children.
The project is led by a certified business trainer who has successfully designed and implemented education programs targeting primary schools in rural Uganda. His background in financial literacy and entrepreneurship, combined with hands-on experience working directly with children and schools, positions him strongly to lead a project that integrates learning with practical enterprise development. His ability to connect with communities and understand the local context ensures that the project remains relevant, inclusive, and impactful.
The team includes certified financial literacy facilitators who are directly responsible for training and mentoring children through their savings clubs. These facilitators are experienced in working with young learners and use age-appropriate tools and participatory methods to engage children in understanding money, savings, and business basics. They are supported by club patrons—teachers based in the participating schools—who help coordinate activities, track progress, and offer day-to-day guidance to the children’s clubs. This school-based mentorship structure strengthens continuity and learning.
Additionally, the project benefits from the support of a seasoned Financial Manager, who ensures the transparent and efficient use of resources, and a Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, who tracks results, gathers data on learning outcomes, and helps the team reflect and improve based on evidence.
Kisoboka Africa has a proven track record of running successful community and school-based programs that build the financial resilience of children, youth, and families. With a strong mix of technical expertise, grassroots connection, and a commitment to accountability, our team is well-positioned to deliver this initiative and scale its impact sustainably.
