Profile

Nitu is a bubbly 9 year old who loves nothing more than skipping rope and dancing with friends. Nitu's family migrated from a slum in India to Nepal to find work when she was very young, so she has spent the vast majority of her life living in Bhaktapur, Nepal. Nitu is the youngest of 8 girls, giving her a confidence that is unmatched in most 9 year olds.

Nitu is one of the few children from her community who has had the privilege to go to school from age 5. Her mother, who was married at just 12 years old, had always been committed to education and determined to provide her children with more than she had as a girl.

However, in 2016 at 8 years old Nitu's father died due to liver failure. While Nitu's mother had worked tirelessly to provide a future for her daughters, her
father had suffered from severe alcoholism for as long as the family could remember. Upon his death the family came to realize he was more deeply in debt than they had realized and could not afford to continue to educate Nitu and her sisters.

Two of Nitu's older sisters, ages 15 and 16 were married shortly after. Nitu and her older sister, Suhana, were abruptly removed from school to work in the street, begging and collecting plastic and cardboard to sell to the government, earning less than $.50 per day.

It was Nitu and her sister Suhana that motivated Happy Kids Center to launch our EducateHKC Sponsorship Program. Suhana and Nitu were the very first students that we sponsored in 2016/2017 and the program was more successful than we ever could have expected.

When Nitu is older she wants to become a nurse. This was the same dream that her older sister, Soni, had for herself before she was married at just 15 in 2017. With your help we can ensure Nitu a different fate, one where she can finish her education with the freedom to pursue her dreams.

  • My January Update

It has been a crazy couple months at Happy Kids Center and Nitu has been enjoying every minute of it! Between Happy Kids Center's 3rd birthday, Dashain Festival, Halloween, and Tihar Festival, she has been very busy! Nitu took part of in a cultural program at her school, where she and her sister performed a beautiful poem in english! At HKC's Tihar festival Nitu performed in two dances in our Tihar program, one dance with her sister and one with her two closest friends! Nitu loves the limelight and enjoyed sharing her culture with all of the HKC supporters who gathered at various guesthouses to watch the event. Nitu even took over as MC for a time! But, don't worry, that has not stopped her from staying focused in school! This term Nitu passed her exams with distinctions. This was a big term for Nitu! Each term Nitu has been slowly improving her class rank. Last term Nitu was ranked number 9 in the class, the term before that she was ranked 13. This term Nitu jumped up t...
