Profile

Right now, I am in Red Flag Middle School. My name is Liu Yan, and I am one of the students in class 85 in ninth grade. My home is in a farm village, and I am the youngest in a family of five. My parents have to take care of my three sisters and it is very difficult. Every day, they always get up early and return late. Their wrinkles are becoming deeper and deeper, their hair whiter.

When we were little, my grandma seemed dissatisfied because the three of us were all girls, and she never held us or took care of us. It was my mom and dad who raised us.

At the time, often mother would go to cut grass, always somehow carrying all of us along with an umbrella and some clothing. After she is covered with clothing, and after putting us on top and blocking the sun with the umbrella, only then could she cut grass. Whenever we started crying, she would hurry over to pacify us- especially me; I really worried my parents when I was little. At the time, my nose was bleeding, and my parents also had to heal my nose in the middle of the night. I would always wake them up at night; they were never able to sleep enough, but they also had to continue working in the day to make money and support our family. In this way, we gradually grew up, gradually entered school. When we just started school, my parents’ income was not enough to pay the tuition- we often had to borrow money from others, and it took us a very long time to pay them back too. Many times, I saw my parents grow very ill, but they still persevered, reluctant to buy medicine. When they went out and got hungry, they were reluctant to buy food; when they went to places they would rather walk than spend money and take a car.

As I was growing up, there were often times when I did not do well on tests, and I always felt horrible. Sometimes my parents would criticize me- they are very strict towards us, because they want us to study hard, make them proud, and have a good job in the future.

Dear Givology: Hello! I am a student who received your help and my name is Yan Liu. Now with your help, I graduated from high school and have become an admirable undergraduate student. These years I experienced laughter and tears. But tears always turned into laughter and I will cheer myself up after sorrow. This is because I know there is someone loves me besides my parents, teachers or classmates. It is you who cared about me and cheered me up. I will not let you down. I am always my parents’ hope, and you are my hope. You shone a light upon me and showed me the sunrise. You are like a raindrop, which quenched my thirst and relieved my parents’ burden. Although I have a poor family, I still feel like I am the happiest person on earth just because of you. Without you, I would have never made it and could have became the useless sand on a beach. Millions of words cannot express my feeling: “Thank you!” It has always been my dream...
