Featured Student: Chifundo Martin

Just as their organization’s name, Advancing Girls’ Education, suggests, AGE Africa is dedicated to creating life-changing opportunities for young Malawian women through a series of targeted initiatives in education, mentoring, and leadership development. It is through these efforts that the non-profit organization hopes to see the manifestation of all African girls gaining equal access to quality secondary education and empowering themselves through their own learning and leadership. Chifundo is one of the many girls that AGE Africa carries under their wings. With a donation of $935 more, we can defray the costs of Chifundo’s tuition, school supplies, and many more!

What is her background?
[ul][li]Currently, Chifundo is enrolled at Providence Secondary School in Malawi where she is finishing her second year and preparing for her Junior Certificate Examination, a test that all high school students are required to take at the end of the school year. Passing this exam is critical to the continuation of Chifundo’s education and thus a brighter future. When Chifundo was only a young girl, her father left the family to work in the South African mines, ultimately leaving the family with no means of support after losing contact since his departure. While her mother has since remarried, adding two more children to her family, Chifundo’s stepfather died, most likely from HIV/AIDS, when Chifundo was in Standard 8.[/li][/ul]
What are her future aspirations?
[ul][li]Chifundo aspires to become a teacher or nurse upon completion of secondary school.[/li][/ul]
What will be the impact of giving her an education?
[ul][li]With the power of education given to her, Chifundo will have the tools to shape not only her future but also her community’s; she will be able to follow and achieve her dream of becoming either a teacher or nurse where she can utilize her abilities to heal and teach her community.
