I think P2P is characteristic of our (Gen Y) times - we are a generation that wishes to break down as many industry / sector, geographical, and economic barriers as possible, carve out a new path...facilitated by the internet!
Today, I looked into another P2P non-profit that uses the power of mass capital aggregation to make an impact for other non-profits. Essentially, it serves three purposes: 1) Help those who want to give select "top" performing non-profits in their fields [guidance and expertise] 2) Allow "top" non-profits to engage participate in a popularity contest judged by the web voters [~online ballot] 3) Efficient channeling of funds [No stamps required for $ donation].
Similar to Globalgiving, but national.
Has elements of politics - online non-profit campaign finance.
Reminds me of finance, with donations aggregated into sector-based "mutual fund."
All in all, I think it is very interesting...we are indeed making our own rules in the non-profit space, borrowing from the for-profit and government sectors. As people are more conscious of how they give, they are making room in the "market" for non-profits to screen other non-profits for quality while still wishing to be democratic. One can see capitalism and skill specialization happening in the non-profit space too.
