Hamza was born in 1995. His parents both died of AIDS before his 6th birthday. He lived with his grandmother for a year before she abandoned him. After that, Hamza lived on the streets, sleeping in alleys and begging for food or eating from trash cans. In 2005 he was brought to an orphanage and began primary school.
Today, Hamza is attending secondary school. It is not easy for an 18 year old to be in his first year of secondary school but he is proud of what he has accomplished. He has gone from a being a 10 year-old who could not read or write to a student earning a āCā average in a demanding school. Even more so, he accomplished this despite over 50% of Tanzania's students not passing the entrance examination into secondary school!
Hanza is working hard to create a better life for himself. Hamza is a born leader. Others look to him for leadership and he provides it. While quiet spoken, every word he says is filled with meaning.
