Profile

The goal of the computer class is to enhance classroom learning and teach students how to use master the fundamentals of computers. These fundamentals include:

-Understanding the purpose and basics of a computer

-An introduction to word processing with Open Office Word

-An introduction to calculation with Open Office Spreadsheet

-An introduction to Graphics with Open Office Drawing

-Software installation

Classes will be ongoing in the fall, spring and summer.

Summer: Classes will be offered from August to September, Monday through Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm.

Fall and spring: Classes will be offered from September to May, Monday through Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm.

$1500 will buy 4 computers and a copier.

History

Cercle Social has been helping the school of Tori since November 2010. In 2010, 78 students dropped out of school for financial reasons. Since our program started, we steadily reduced this number by 35%. In July 2011, our local team completed an assessment of the school condition in collaboration with the school officials. The evaluation revealed that families have serious financials issues to stay in school. The president of Cercle Social, Mr. Houngninou visited the school in person in May 2012. This project will provide the students of the high school with a computer training class during the summer and during the school year so that students get hands-on experience with computers. By using this approach we give students a better chance to secure employment and internships by adding a valuable skill to their curriculum.

Impact

For the school year 2012-2013 Cercle Social will train 200 Students.

The long-term vision of this project is to introduce computer classes in more schools in Benin. By using this approach we give students a better chance to secure employment by adding a valuable skill to their curriculum. This initiative also shows a good example for neighboring schools to follow.

Team Credentials

Cercle Social's mission is to improve the access to secondary education for vulnerable youth in Benin and provide them with the necessary tools to secure further studies and employment.
