Description
Solar Meninos de Luz is a philanthropic civil organization founded in 1991 and recognized by federal and municipal services in Brazil. It promotes full-time education, career training, cultural activities, sports, as well as basic healthcare services for the communities of Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo in Zona Sul, Rio de Janeiro.
It was initiated by the Lar Paulo de Tarso organization, a branch of the Brazilian Spiritist Church, which has been carrying out extensive social projects in the area since 1983.
Mission: To educate children and young people living in socially vulnerable conditions in the Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo districts, stressing prevention and the participation of the family and the community, with the aim of forming conscientious, dignified and free individuals who, with a solid foundation in academic, ethical and moral education, will act as spokespeople working towards social transformation in their community by focusing on basic values and expectations.

Solar’s vision or mission is to educate children holistically—not just academically, but also culturally, physically and morally—in order to provide them with the same opportunities as students from more affluent social areas. It is impossible to emphasize the importance of Solar in the students’ lives, as they receive comprehensive education along with other important aspects of social care, including access to a free medical and dental clinic, a community library and extracurricular activities such as music, theater and English lessons. The school is currently in need of serious refurbishment and development, but two of its greatest needs are providing nutritious food for its students (aged 3 months to 18 years old)—who remain at school from 8am to 5pm—as well as paying...
