Mary is from the village of Ndakwera in rural Chikwawa. She lost both her parents while she was in primary school and is now an orphan. A teacher at her primary school, spoke with the village headman about her future and identified Mary as an academically gifted student. The village headman adopted Mary and her two siblings, as well as eight other orphans, so that he could assist her in her educational pursuits. Mary was selected into Providence Secondary School, a national boarding school in 2008. Next year Catherine hopes to pass her leaving examination with a score high enough to attend nursing school.
