Expansion of Circle of Peace School
$3000 of $3000 donated

Kampala, Uganda

Circle of Peace School project is an educational initiative designed to provide kindergarten and elementary education. Currently, the existing location of the school will be unavailable after December 2009 because the school is being evicted from its existing property. As a result, the school is moving all primary school students to the Upper school where they will have to share space until new shelters can be provided for them. The Circle of Peace School is asking for help to start building structures to allow their students to continue their education. Most of their students are orphans, aids victims whose parents have died, and poor children who can’t afford to pay for education. Currently there are 105 students in the lower school and 100 in the upper school. With these funds, the school will purchase all the necessary materials to begin building. Solo Village School Repair
$360 of $500 donated

Bougouni, Mali

Originally constructed ten years ago, the school in the rural village of Solo in Mali, West Africa has severely deteriorated due to lack of quality structural supplies and the abuse of harsh weather conditions. The building was built with mud bricks covered by a thin layer of cement. The cement on the floors and ceilings is beginning to crack and break, and in one classroom the broken concrete has left a large hole in the floor, leaving the classroom unusable if the ground is wet from rain. Another classroom has a make-shift roof of poor-quality tin that leaks during the rainy season. The tin roof needs to be replaced by a durable cement roof and the floors are in need of durable cement to prevent cracking and flooding.
An Egg Every Day

Shanxi (山西), China

Malnutrition is a significant health problem for children in rural China. According to a 2006 survey sponsored by Stanford University, student diets in over 50% of primary schools in poor areas of Northwest China (where our school is located) contain little or no protein. More and more children in rural China are starting to board at school from an early age. They eat three meals a day at school and their families are responsible for paying meal fees. The government does not run a nutrition program or give direct subsidies for school meals. Guardians and school administrators are not well-informed about the linkages between good nutrition, children's development, and educational performance so they often are not willing to pay for adequantely nutritious food for their students. As a result, rural children's diets at home and school lack essential nutrients like proteins, iron, and important vitamins. Our observations are that many of the children in our program have stunted ...
