Focus on Giving: Nancy Walters, Teacher at Fillmore Elementary School

Day 15: Focus on Giving - Nancy Walters, Teacher at Fillmore Elementary School

Nancy Walters is one of the most inspiring change makers in our Givology community. As an elementary school teacher, she has nurtured her students to think about the global community and their own role in the world. Below is a bio in her own words.

I am originally from Kentucky where I graduated from Asbury University, a Christian Liberal Arts School in Ky, with a degree in Elementary Education. I received my MS Degree in Education with an emphasis on emergent literacy from the State University of New York in Geneseo, New York.

For the past 25 years I have taught in the public school system in Ohio and New York with experience in grades Kindergarten through fourth grade. The majority of my teaching has been in western New York in first and second grade. I’ve been in a looping situation for the past six years which I think is ideal.

One of my passions is teaching students to see beyond themselves and how they are connected to the rest of the world. I love doing a Global Service Learning Project and integrating the curriculum with the project. The children enjoy it a lot!

Last summer I gave a presentation at a conference called “IT” (Innovating Teaching) for teachers in western New York. It was designed to show how 21st century learning skills can be integrated in the classroom. Our Global Project is great for this kind of teaching.

I also enjoy keeping up a class website that features my students’ work in pictures, movies and podcasts. It’s fun for the parents and students.

What a privilege go to work every day to a job I enjoy!
