Profile

My name is Jeremiah Oyako. I grew up in Makina, a region within Kibera. I was raised by my grandparents, who told me a lot about my family. They told me that I was the second born of five children. I had one older sister, one younger brother and two other younger sisters. I was told that my older sister only reached form two, so did not finish high school, the third born is in class six, the fourth born is in class four, and the youngest of my siblings is in pre school. No one has seen my parents since they left me under the care of my grandparents. I wish I could have met them with my brother and sisters.

I started school when I was three years older. After I finished lower primary school, I joined upper primary school. I had to work very hard as it was much more difficult than lower primary school. We were often asked to perform chores around the school, such as carrying bags of maize to store or carrying stacks of firewood.

Primary school was very difficult for me because I often had to transfer schools due to increasing fees. Sometimes I was unable afford the full school uniform, and sometimes I was unable to afford all of the books required for my classes. I was often kicked out of school because I was unable to pay tuition. My grandparents are under a lot of stress to find my school fees, however, they are not a suitable age to be working.

    October 2017 Update from Jeremiah

    [font=arial, sans-serif]Jeremiah is currently in his fourth year of High school, and will be graduating in November 2017. He enjoys soccer and is looking forward to joining college after high school. He was taken off the[/font][font=arial, sans-serif]CFK[/font][font=arial, sans-serif] scholarship due to non-compliance in 2015 and the parent has since been raising funds on her own to pay for his school fees.[/font]
