Description

Educate! works to directly address the most fundamental challenge facing Africa: the lack of socially responsible leadership across diverse sectors of society. Educate! equips and mobilizes students to help solve the greatest challenges faced by African communities by starting grassroots movements to find local solutions to local problems. Educate! supports these young leaders as they work to create sustainable change.

Educate!’s trendsetting, two-year program for high school students, or Educate! Scholars, in Uganda is called the Educate!Experience. The Educate! team and scholarship students at Educate!’s office in Kampala, Uganda
Ugandan Mentors who go through a rigorous selection and preparation process are placed at partner schools to lead Educate! Scholars through the Experience, which consists of two components: 1) An innovative leadership curriculum designed with the help of our worldwide partner organizations; 2) A student led social enterprise that effectively and sustainably addresses a community need

Impact

In 2009, the Experience will reach 415 high school students through six Ugandan mentors at 24 different partner schools.

I love bright colors. Colors speak a lot about who I am within; a principled, social and simple person who loves fashion and design. Fashion is an expression of the beauty underneath our scars. I intend to use fashion to celebrate heritage and culture. Young girls in my community are traumatized and abused, stripped of their dignity as a woman. Many times, women cry, I have seen them cry and I have cried too. The pain of growing up in a culture that attaches no respect to a woman has haunted me all my life. In as much as I would like to change the status quo, I had never figured out how best I can transform my community, or maybe I was just afraid to take the step. My decision to join the Social Entrepreneurship and leadership Course is inspired by the urge to lead the course of empowerment for all in my community. I care about the orphaned and those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Uganda, Uganda

I lost my father at an early age; I help out with my mother’s roadside business every evening after school. From childhood, I have observed with keen interest the role political leaders play in society. I have aspirations of taking on a political position so that I may change the lives of my people. This, I learnt in the Social Entrepreneurship and leadership, is community leadership. So today, I want to start transforming my community step by step, helping the helpless and saving the environment.

Uganda, Uganda

I live with my grandmother and three other siblings in a poor rural household. My father is a retired commercial driver who cannot manage to take care of dependants. To many of my peers, there isn’t much to hope for in such circumstances, but I see myself as a leader who can set up projects for the youth and other people that are idle and have nothing to do in the community. I also want to promote justice in the republic of Uganda. I am proud to be part of the Social Entrepreneurship and Leadership Course because Educate! has got me young professionals to guide me in setting my goals and pursuing them. That is the reason I joined the course. Four years from now, I see myself creating many jobs in my community

I first encountered mentor Otim on my very first day at high school. He was kind and very composed. When he spoke, there was vibrancy in his voice. His attitude was appealing; he knew the secrets of relating with young people. Instantly, I admired him. Our conversation drew us to a common place; leadership. I attended early primary in Kenya, living with both my parents. My mother is Kenyan and my father is Ugandan. In early secondary, I was moved to Uganda and put under the custody of my grandparents who paid my school fees till the death of my grandfather three years later. At that moment I should have dropped out of school, but for a kind hearted relative who took up the responsibility to pay my school fees. I have practiced school leadership all the while since primary one. I envision myself a great leader in Africa. Today, I am not just undertaking the Social Entrepreneurship and leadership course that mentor Otim facilitates; I am the president of the social entrepreneurship cl...

Uganda, Uganda

I have no memories of my parents. My relatives tell me they passed on when I was a very little girl. I was adopted by an aunt who left me in custody of another aunt. As a young orphaned girl with great aspiration, I have had to deal with challenges, both social and financial. My decision to join the Social Entrepreneurship and Leadership Course is rooted upon my desire to develop my potentials to set goals, develop my vision and work effectively with others people in the community to solve community problems.
