Profile

I feel like education is the most basic step in international development. I believe it is the area in which the most concrete and long-lasting impact can be made. I love the idea of Givology and am happy to be a part of the community.

Kampala, Uganda

I have attended Peace Nursery and Primary School from the time I was old enough to enroll in Nursery School. Five years ago my parents died. Since then the School has provided me a place to live, food, medical care, and covered all my educational expenses. I live in a one-room dormitory with 14 other boys. One of the teachers stays in the dorm with us. On holidays I travel to the Village of Mityana to visit my grandmother and see my sisters and brothers.   I am the top student in my class. I like to study and am very disciplined. Social studies is my favorite subject. I will graduate from Peace Nursery and Primary School in December 2009. I want to enroll in secondary school and then college but this will depend on finding funding for my education. I would appreciate your help.   Note: Peace Nursery and Primary School is a private school serving orphans and other children unable to afford the costs of attending public schools. As such, it receives no funding from public sources. L...

My name is Laura Vanessa. I was born in a small town called El Cocuy, on November 13, 1996, at 1:15 a.m. I am 11 years old. My mother’s name is Nydia Arleny and my father’s is Jairo Andrés. I have one younger sister and one younger brother. Their names are Angelica Paola and Jairo. My father works as a truck driver. My mother stays home and takes care of us. We live in a rented apartment. My father is gone most of the time because he travels a lot. It is part of his job. My family has financial difficulties because the only income we have is from my dad’s job. School expenses and food cost the most. We do not own a house yet because my parents are paying for our education and can not afford to get a house. My mother does not have a job because the town where we live is very small and the jobs available are already taken. I am on 7th grade. I attend the Urbana Mixta School. My younger sister and brother also attend the same school. They are in 3rd and 2nd grade. In my spare ti...
Alex Mwangi
$65 of $400 donated

Kinangop, Kenya

Seven-year-old Alex and his brothers have had a lot to cope with in the past few years. Alex's devoted mother, who was a single parent, died when he was five. In his own words, overheard by Joyce, a matron of the Kinangop Children's Center: "They put my mother in the ground. The covered her with dirt, because she died. There were lots of people all around, and then I am here." Friends and church members only realized she did not have any living family members to take the children in when the memorial service had ended. "The youngest child (Alex), still standing there, did not know who he was supposed to leave with, in which direction to walk," wrote a concerned church member. An appeal was filed with Flying Kites, and later that evening, Alex and his brothers became some of the very first children to be welcomed through our doors. Despite Alex's outgoing personality, he has some behavioral issues that require individual attention. Like many of our oth...
Expansion of Circle of Peace School
$3000 of $3000 donated

Kampala, Uganda

Circle of Peace School project is an educational initiative designed to provide kindergarten and elementary education. Currently, the existing location of the school will be unavailable after December 2009 because the school is being evicted from its existing property. As a result, the school is moving all primary school students to the Upper school where they will have to share space until new shelters can be provided for them. The Circle of Peace School is asking for help to start building structures to allow their students to continue their education. Most of their students are orphans, aids victims whose parents have died, and poor children who can’t afford to pay for education. Currently there are 105 students in the lower school and 100 in the upper school. With these funds, the school will purchase all the necessary materials to begin building. Please click on “view my updates” (under the profile picture) to see pictures of the school and read additional commentary. Mor...
Jameson Lauture
$55 of $55 donated

Sud East, Haiti

My name Jameson Lauture, and I am 13 year old. I am going to a small elementary school and I am in the 6th grade. I was born in Lavial, a very small and poor village around La Vallee de Jacmel. The hurricanes uprooted the trees in our neighborhood and also destroyed our crops. My dad is a farmer in an area where it does not rain very much. As a result, our income is very low, and we can barely survive. I am afraid that I will be forced to drop out of school because my dad can’t afford to pay the tuition. Every day, I dream about finding a way to not worry about paying my tuition. Otherwise my goal to be an engineer one day will never come true.
