Hi guys, I'm Sarah. A frosh at Providence College in RI.
I heard about Givology and the holiday challenge from my high school debate friend Ankit. I'm very excited to be able to partake =)
To me,
Education.. is when the DESIRE to know how the world works (from societal norms to the rules of gravitational physics) comes into sometimes brief, but always meaningful encounter.. with the MEANS by which truth is made accessible and knowledge is attained. Education in that sense is providing a means to satisfy a desire to learn.
The way I see it,
If we want to know something, (you sitting at the computer screen reading this, and me typing this on my keyboard), If we want to know something, anything or everything, we simply say the word :) Or maybe type the word.. into a search engine that brings up to wikipedia :)
We truly have the world at our fingertips.
Within seconds of a conscious decision and often unacknowledged yet definitive commitment to know more, we find what we are looking for.
Within second, literally seconds, we are learning.
But that's not how it is for everyone around the world. DUH, but maybe that can change. I think that's what we're all hoping for here, and I really believe together we can make a difference :) and change how readily accessible an education is for people world-wide.
The desire is there. It's everywhere. They just need the tools, the help. With these tools... desire will flourish, and education will only grow and expand.
