My parents ran a small shop in Makindye (a suburb of Kampala, Uganda). Mrs. Amina Bbaaale used to shop there. When my parents got sick from AIDS, I wondered what would become of me. I expected that like my parents I, too, would soon be dead because I am HIV positive. Mrs. Bbaale told my parents I would be welcome to live with her and attend Peace Nursery and Primary School. Every month the Headmaster takes me to a clinic to get shots. The shots are really helping and I look forward to a long life. People who knew me before I came to Peace School do not recognize me now because my condition has improved so much. I would not be alive if not for Peace School. My life has turned around. I am so thankful for Mrs. Bbaale. The family compound has been converted into a school that serves those like me who cannot pay school fees. Members of her family operate the school, teach, and somehow raise the money to keep the school going. There is a Girls Dormitory at the school but because...

My brother and I came to Peace School when my father died two years ago. My mother could not afford to take care of us so she turned us over to the care of Peace School. Niukasa Musa, my 10-year old brother, is in the Primary 3 class. He lives in the Boy’s Dormitory and I live in the Girl’s Dormitory. My best friend is named Vivian. She is a Muslim like me. On Fridays we go to the Mosque for prayers. Altogether there are three Muslim girls in our dormitory. My favorite subject is science. I would like to be a doctor and help sick people get well. I hope you can help me achieve my dream of being a doctor. Note: Peace Nursery and Primary School is a private school serving orphans and other children unable to afford the costs of attending public schools. As such, it receives no funding from public sources. Located in a suburb of Uganda’s capital city Kampala, the school is in a highly urban setting and must pay for water and sanitation service as well as teacher salar...

Until this year I lived with my family in a remote village in the northern part of Uganda. I came to Peace School six months ago. I had never been to school before. After my father died, Mrs. Oliver, who is a teacher at the School, brought me here. She was a friend of my father. I now live at Peace School with 14 other boys in the Boy’s Dormitory. During the holidays I go back to my village and stay with my grandfather. I miss my family a lot. It is good to see my mother, brothers and sister. My family speaks Swahili and it has been difficult to learn English and attend a school where classes are taught in English. My favorite subject is math. Thank you for helping me to get a good education. Note: Peace Nursery and Primary School is a private school serving orphans and other children unable to afford the costs of attending public schools. As such, it receives no funding from public sources. Located in a suburb of Uganda’s capital city Kampala, the school is in a hig...

My name is Grace Nakisozi. I am eight years old and the youngest child in my family. My family and I live in the village several miles away from the Circle of Peace School. I have one sister. Her name is Jessica, and she is nine years old. Several years ago, my father was eaten by a crocodile as we were getting water from the river. After I saw the crocodile eat my father, I was in shock and could not speak or hear for six months. I am starting to hear and speak again; however, it is very difficult. Soon after my father died, my mother passed away after she became really sick. Now I live with my grandmother who raises me and my brother and sister. My sister and I help my grandmother pick food. I love to go to the Circle of Peace School because I want to have a better life and be better able to help my family, like the other students at my school. The Circle of Peace School is my new family, and I promise to work hard in school. My dream is to build a well for my village so that my f...
Serah

Serah is a very compassionate little girl. She is always concerned for other people, and often will tell an adult if she suspects a certain child is upset/tired/frustrated. She loves jumping rope and her favorite food is chapattis (Kenya’s version of a tortilla). She is an excellent student and wants to be a doctor when she grows up. While Flying Kites respects our children's right to privacy, we feel it important to convey to their supporters the various desperate situations from which they have come. In a cross-small section of the children living at the Flying Kites Leadership Academy, you will find that all of the children in our care were born into absolute poverty. The children who are accepted into our Home have no other options for care with extended family members, or they have been removed from their parent's custody. We cater to children who have been orphaned, abused, abandoned, and raped. Some of the children in our care were forced into marriage as the age of...
